Nishiki Gawa

Acer palmatum

About

Another extremely corky pine bark type maple. Exceptional Fall colors of yellow to orange and red. Significant discussion exists on the differences between Arakawa and Nishiki Gawa. On Maple Hill, Nishiki Gawa is containerized versus the two Arakawa, but Nishiki Gawa seems a bit slower with perhaps an earlier onset. I suspect Nishiki Gawa to be a better candidate for bonsai and containers generally. Nishiki Gawa has been translated to mean brocade river or twisted river. Here, I think it refers to the pine bark coursing up the green river of the trunk.
