Rohan Gold

Fagus sylvatica

About

This beautiful cultivar originates from Van Hoey Smith at Arboretum Trompenburg. It may be a Zlatia hybrid, and is considered to be synonymous with Rohanii Aurea. Rohan Gold is definitely a case of making sure it is well sited. It needs plenty of sun, especially in Spring to give it that beautiful gold, but too much sun leads to burnt leaves or full on defoliation. The leaves are quite ruffled and puckered at the edges and really form a purple European Beeches as well as Japanese maples. Add in Japanese White Pine, and you may never be able to pull yourself away!
